Abstract

"Urban planning and development are a meeting ground for different experiences and interpretations pertaining to the desirable city, and the ways in which citizens should genuinely be able to participate in the process. This multidisciplinary book explores broadly the question of how to best approach participation today. Instead of aiming at a singular interpretation, the book sets out to develop tools for a better understanding of the different logics behind urban development and citizen participation. The authors explore themes ranging from governmental structures and settings all the way to individual lifeworlds and experiences, and provide several well-founded propositions on what participation is about. The articles give voice to actors from the public sphere, from the third and fourth sectors, as well as to citizens in different social roles and positions. The book serves as a text book in disciplines related to urban development and participation, and as an information source for professionals and citizens interested in the topic."

Abstract

This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC) open access license. This jointly authored book extends understanding of the use of sport to address global development agendas by offering an important departure from prevailing theoretical and methodological approaches in the field. Drawing on nearly a decade of wide-ranging multidisciplinary research undertaken with young people and adults living and working in urban communities in Zambia, the book presents a localised account that locates sport for development in historical, political, economic and social context. A key feature of the book is its detailed examination of the lives, experiences and responses of young people involved in sport for development activities, drawn from their own accounts. The book's unique approach and content will be highly relevant to academic researchers and post-graduate students studying sport and development in across many different contexts.

Abstract

This book integrates the results of Dr. Carol Johnston’s research on beaver ecosystem alteration at Voyageurs National Park, a mature beaver-altered landscape named after the French-Canadian voyageurs who transported packs of beaver pelts through the region more than 250 years ago. The text synthesizes information about the vegetation, soils, and chemistry of beaver impoundments, bridging the fields of ecosystem science and landscape ecology to analyze the dynamics of a beaver-altered landscape. The findings from this mature system can inform other scientists and managers about the sustainability and long-term ecosystem effects of beaver activity that is still expanding in much of North America. These findings are also compared to studies of beaver-occupied landscapes in other locations, including the Adirondacks, Tierra del Fuego, and other national parks. Dr. Carol A. Johnston is Professor of Ecology in the Department of Natural Resource Management at South Dakota State University. She is a Certified Professional Soil Scientist, a Fellow of the Society of Wetland Scientists, and a life member of the Ecological Society of America.

Abstract

Over the past few decades, various types of hate material have caused increasing concern. Today, the scope of hate is wider than ever, as easy and often-anonymous access to an enormous amount of online content has opened the Internet up to both use and abuse. By providing possibilities for inexpensive and instantaneous access without ties to geographic location or a user identification system, the Internet has permitted hate groups and individuals espousing hate to transmit their ideas to a worldwide audience. Online Hate and Harmful Content focuses on the role of potentially harmful online content, particularly among young people. This focus is explored through two approaches: firstly, the commonality of online hate through cross-national survey statistics. This includes a discussion of the various implications of online hate for young people in terms of, for example, subjective wellbeing, trust, self-image and social relationships. Secondly, the book examines theoretical frameworks from the fields of sociology, social psychology and criminology that are useful for understanding online behaviour and online victimisation. Limitations of past theory are assessed and complemented with a novel theoretical model linking past work to the online environment as it exists today. An important and timely volume in this ever-changing digital age, this book is suitable for graduates and undergraduates interested in the fields of Internet and new media studies, social psychology and criminology. The analyses and findings of the book are also particularly relevant to practitioners and policy-makers working in the areas of Internet regulation, crime prevention, child protection and social work/youth work.
